How To Make Sure Your Internet Is Always Ready On Demand

When you buy internet service, you expect it to work. While your internet should always be ready when you need it, there are a few things you can do to ensure that you have the consistent speeds and service you expect.

Use a New Router

All internet routers work the same when considering the big picture, but the internal technology changes each year. Especially for Wi-Fi routers, newer routers can handle faster speeds, reach longer distances, work with more modern devices, and better handle congestion.

If you have an older router, there's a good chance that it will work with your current internet service. However, you may not be able to get the maximum range and speeds if your router doesn't have the modern technology needed to match the level of service your internet service provider is giving you.

Watch Out for Network Crowding

You should also watch out for network congestion. This includes both on your network and if you have neighbors within Wi-Fi range.

On your network, each device shares the same bandwidth, so multiple devices trying to do high-intensity tasks could lower the speeds for everyone. Sometimes, this is a question of your router's capacity and not your level of internet service, so make sure you have a router with the capacity to handle your full intended usage.

When you have nearby neighbors, your Wi-Fi network may overlap with theirs. Even if it's a different network name and password, your computers and routers lose speed when they're trying to sort out which signals belong to them and which signals are for a different network. You can avoid this by getting a newer router with more frequencies and changing to a channel that your neighbors aren't using.

Mind Your Cloud Backups

If you use cloud backups for your photos or your entire hard drive, that's a heavy use of bandwidth. Either your router or the device you're on may not be able to handle the backup plus normal internet usage at the same time.

You can solve this problem by either scheduling your backups to only happen at night or by getting a router with a higher capacity. For long-term use, the router upgrade is probably the better bet since you'll want to be able to access your cloud files at any time.
